Are we building peoplewho know how tolead themselves?

Where this work comes from
Nicholle Walton-Durban has spent her career building—companies, teams, programs, schools, systems, and communities.
Across industries and roles, one question kept surfacing: We say we want capable, independent people—then often build systems that do too much of the thinking, deciding, managing, and problem-solving for them.
What are we building in people?
Today, Nicholle brings decades of building, leading, experimenting, succeeding, failing, questioning, and rebuilding to her work around agency, self-leadership, leadership, education, organizations, and human development.
Speaking topics
Talks That Challenge How We Lead, Learn & Build People
For women leaders, educators, parents, entrepreneurs, and the organizations that serve them.
The Agency Gap
Most adults were trained to wait for permission. This talk traces how we build that dependence into kids, teams, and families, and how to reverse it by moving people from agency to ownership, accountability, and self-leadership.
Live Like You Lead
Most of us can describe the leader we expect others to be. This talk asks whether our own lives would pass that test.
Watch the talk→The Hardest Person You'll Ever Lead
The person who holds everyone else up is often the last person they learn to lead well. A talk on boundaries, identity, and the responsibility no one else can carry for you.
Just Because She Can
Girls who adapt to everything get labeled "fine." Why adaptability is so often mistaken for thriving, and what the adults around them miss.

Work with Nicholle
Ideas matter. But what we build around them matters more.
I work with people and organizations to move these ideas from philosophy into practice — building the systems, frameworks, environments, and organizations that develop greater agency, ownership, accountability, and self-leadership.
Keynotes & Speaking
Talks that change how audiences think about agency, leadership, and the people they're responsible for. Built for conferences, leadership events, and education gatherings.
Workshops
Half-day and full-day sessions that turn the ideas into practice with your team: decision rights, ownership, accountability, and self-leadership.
Consulting
For founders and organizations designing or rebuilding their systems, culture, and operations. Strategy backed by years of running what I recommend.
Coaching & Fractional Leadership
The work usually starts when an organization depends on one exhausted person to hold everything together. It ends when it no longer does. One-on-one coaching and fractional Head of School or COO support.
Built in the real world
Built in the Real World.
Every idea I teach has been tested in something I built.

The Agency Gap
Part memoir, part leadership book about the agency we take from others, the agency we surrender ourselves, and the question I keep coming back to: What actually belongs to me?
What are you trying to build?
Whether you're planning a keynote, developing leaders, strengthening a team, or building something new, the work starts with better questions about the people and systems you're creating.
Let's build something that builds people.
